I've noticed that a lot of us, including me, are quick to get on anyone for killing a snake, or rattlesnake roundups. Such as the one picture I saw of the 2 idiots who killed a bunch of moccasins up in Alabama, or what state it was I cannot remember. Anyways, I have not seen much, or any, posts regarding habitat destruction. My question is, is there not anything we can do about it? As a kid in my parents' home, when I was around 10-13 years old, there was a lot of areas in which I would go looking for snakes. 80% of that land I used to search in has been developed and it really really makes me upset more than any idiot killing a snake. Is there not anything that can be, or has been done, to stop this? If so what is the solution? We can't "control" the human population so what can be done? This is a very grim future we are all looking at.

Sure there are things you can do.
You can buy land. Not realistic for most people but there are groups out there that buys land for one purpose, to save it from development. You can donate money or the land you own to these groups. Some of these groups get the state to consider them state parks or wetlands that can't be touched. By doing this no one has to pay taxes on the land and still makes the land safe from the bulldozer.
The state of Florida also buys land to expand and stop development around the everglades, Ocala and Okefenokee National forest. (I'm sure they buy land all over but these are the only areas I have heard of)I'm sure each state does something similar.
One problem is if you buy land and save it that just means they will build around it. By donating money to these groups it allows them to buy larger areas of land.
To save land you have to buy it before Wal Mart does. ;-) But if you give up our land will be gone for sure. Donate what you can because every dollar helps.

1) Education - As a college professor not a lesson goes by that I don't mention the harmful effects of habitat destruction and things that we can do to prevent it. Hopefully my students carry that message out to others (Of course it helps that I run the Environmental Engineering Technology Department)
2) As a land owner I make certain that I follow Best Management Practices (BMPs) for my farm and home
3) I regularly donate to groups that buy land for conservation easements. My favorite is The Nature Conservancy, but I am sure other people have their favorite.
4) And I still find time to tell people that rattlesnake roundups are bad ;)
