We are looking for any opinions on a Reptile show in Arkansas. Would you like to attend, be a vendor, etc? Good idea or not? Any suggestions?
We greatly appreciate all opinions!
Thank You,
Cathy Elrod

Would be too far for me to drive to be a vendor, however, the Ozark Mountains in that State are really nice to drive through.

As much as I'd love to see another herp show up and running here in Arkansas, I fear that the turnout would mirror that of the TexasReptiles shows that used to be held here: i.e. minimal. There isn't just a huge network of herpers in this state, though we do have two active herp societies (Central AR Herp Society, http://members.aol.com/harbard/cahshome/cahshome.html?f=fs, and the Arkansas Herp Society, http://www.snakesofarkansas.com).
So, there may be a decent demand for a show if it was advertised well enough. I'd personally do as much as I could to promote it in any way I could, and I'd certainly vend if I could get the time.

you have two pretty good size markets in little rock and memphis, tn. they are only about 2 hours apart. if there was a proper location somewhere on i40 between the 2, i think there is potential. i would certainly be willing to work it, i can put together a venomous reptiles of AR display. i think i have everything, except the wdb and they are dime/dozen. if i were promoting it, i would look for a low rent location about 50 to 60 miles east of little rock right on i40 and i would advertise heavy in little rock and memphis, tn. there is very little recreation in that area. if the people know there is something going on, they will come out to see it. there are a good number of venders in east tx that i don't think we have used very often on our east coast shows. it wouldn't be too far of a trip for them. there is also a strong herp community in LA. this spot wouldn't be too much of a trip for them. if we go with the idea, perhaps we should look at Terry Vandeventer as a speaker. he is in MS, not too far out from there and his name on the card would pull some ppl from the herp community.

Chuck, that area between LR and Memphis would be great! And just think, all you'd need to do is say you MIGHT just spot an Ivory Billed Woodpecker while attending the show and people would flock there in groves! (A little sarcastic humor at our state's newest cashcrop/bird)
In all seriousness, I think you make some great points, and with the right about of promotion you really could get a decent turnout. I'd soooooo love to see another show start here in the Natural State.

I would love to see a herp show come to AR. I think the closest we have is the one in St. Louis, MO and that is around 7 hours away for me.

We would love to do another show in Arkansas, we promoted 4 of them here.
However, there isn't enough of a crowd to support the show.
Getting vendors to vend is another problem. There aren't enough vendors in Arkansas to support it. Getting vendors from out of state is another problem because of past attendance, the "drive" into the state, etc. As I said, I would love to see another show here, but it is not feasable and the promoter will lose $.
A show between Little Rock and Memphis wouldn't do well either.
Memphis has one of the most horrible "laws" regarding the ownership and possession of herps. Tennessee also has horrible laws regarding reptiles/amphibians.
I wish Cathy Elrod good luck in her endeavor if she decides to promote one in Arkansas.

Randal , you many be right, but if no one ever tests the water, we will never know. memphis and TN are strict on venomous and natives, but the money at these shows isn't made there anyway. its in boas, balls, geckos, dragons, and none of those are regulatied in the great state of TN. there was a time when no one thought a show in Columbia, SC would draw, and look at it now. a couple ran a show in Nashville couple years ago, and it was packed with venders. there is no shortage of sellers out there, its all about getting your product into the public eye. i have made that trip accorss 40 few times. the locals there have nothing, so give them something, anything, they will come. memphis and little rock are close enough to pull the so-so herpers and LA, MS, MO, East TX is close enough to pull the more dedicatied herpers like us. the location is sound, the varible will be advertisment. can you get the word out within a budget where you can make money. the first show i ever worked was in bristol 2003. Mike was the head. we were packed with venders and people were lined up around the block to get in, but he spent so much money on the advertisment, he ended up not making profit. there is your key, Cat knows exactly what to do, they have proved that over and over. the key is, can she do it in that area within a budget that makes it worth her time.

My boyfriend and I would love to go to a show here in Arkansas. We live in Ft. Smith, but would drive up to 3.5 hours to go. Would love for Little Rock area...or maybe just a bit east of it wouldn't be too bad of a drive.
