Snakes alive! King cobra reported in Cumberland woods

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Wildlife agents are scouring the woods near Cedar Creek after a man says he spotted what looks like a king cobra there last week.
Vernon Byrd was on an all-terrain vehicle in a field off Johnson Road last Tuesday when he said an 8-foot-long snake reared up beside him – and the serpent's head was about shoulder high to him.
"I caught something out of my eye, and this snake comes up beside me and looked at me," Byrd said. "I've seen every kind of snake in this part of the country, but I've never seen a snake like this."
He called Freddie Mims, a licensed wildlife rescue agent, who said the description of the snake sounded like a king cobra, the world's largest poisonous snake.
"Somebody (probably) had one illegally and sold it illegally. The person that bought it (likely) accidentally let it escape," Mims said.
Cumberland County Animal Control officials said they're trying to determine if anyone in the area ever owned a king cobra. Having an exotic pet is illegal in Cumberland County and carries a $1,000 fine.
Nearby residents said they thought the snake escaped from Jambba's Ranch, a local tourist attraction with exotic animals like a 700-pound bear and a camel.
"It's not true. We don't have a king cobra. We never had a king cobra," said James Bass, owner of Jambba's Ranch.
Residents said pit bull puppies and chickens have disappeared in recent days.
"(I'm) staying in the house," said Ida Edge, who has been on edge about the situation.
Byrd said he doesn't walk in the field anymore without a gun, and he won't go into the woods where he last saw the snake.
"(Wildlife agents) tried to get me to go with them, but I wouldn't. I told them they hadn't seen what I'd seen."

This sounds like your typical Uncle Cletus or Aunt Rena Ray type story. Blown way out of proportion.
I bet $10 and a case of moonshine, it was a coach whip he saw. Or a hognose that puffed at him.

Wow, recently there has been a huge surge in said sightings. I think, peta, and hsus, have finally discovered a plan that will work. Get political motivation through fear tactics, didnt this work for hitler as well? Really sad that our country and freedoms are almost totally destroyed. Europe and australia are looking better everyday (but i do love my south so much :( Truely heartbreaking that this process has started

The process of false sightings, dumpings, etc...has been around for a long time, but at first it was just us big cat people who were targeted and nobody believed us some of the stuff was pure propaganda and set up, 10 years ago we were fighting alone.
See this article I wrote and updated until fall 2007
http://www.rexano.org//NewsArchivePages/SuspiciousFeb06Frame.htm
In the last paragraph I describe ‘baby lion at large’ situation found at PETA friendly Detroit zoo but instantly blamed on pet owners. I decided to be the private solution to the screams that this baby was supposedly sick and there were no homes for these animals.
I lived in WA at the time and already owned my reptiles and big cats, I called MI SPCA who was keeping the lion found in Detroit ZOO and offered to pay for the lion’s medical treatment, crate and transport to WA to me. I was flatly told NO.
After the cub was used for anti exotic propaganda, to get media/donations, it was sent to AR friendly sanctuary.

And in December 1999 in Michigan, a 10 week old lion cub miraculously appeared on the grounds of the Belle Isle Zoo in Detroit, whose director is Ron Kagan (Kagan's animal rights leanings are so strong that he won "2004 PETA progress Award" for supposedly making the Detroit Zoo the first zoo to voluntarily close its elephant exhibit for ethical reasons). This happened a few weeks before the House Committee was scheduled to discuss and just few days after the Senate passed the "Large carnivore act". The act not surprisingly became a law later in 2000.
The lion cub was adopted by the Michigan Humane Society who helped introduce this legislation. The incident was as usual blamed on private pet owners, but seems to be conspicuously missing from all AR websites reports on feline related incidents, many going back to 1990 (reporting false sightings with no cat or even print being found), yet this one is omitted. One can only wonder why.

For the longest time I kept my hobby to myself, even before I started keeping hots. Reason being is becuase I didn't want any hassles from limp wristed neighbors who inturn go to the government for every aspect of their lives.
I remember when my mom lived in Seattle, and remember taking a drive thru some tree logging areas. I saw some towns that had turned into ghost towns becuase of government laws based on unsound enviromental issues. A large billboard in one town said the following " ARE YOU AN ENVIROMENTALIST? OR DO YOU WORK FOR A LIVING?". That right there hits the nail on the head if you ask me. Some of the forests out there are 4th and 6th generation pine forests, that companies like Weyerhouser and Georgia Pacific has been logging for the last 125 years or so. But if you listen to a tree hugger, you would think those comapnies were cutting the trees down and not replanting for future harvesting. Those comapnies were planting trees decades before it was the cool thing to do.
These so called AR groups are no different than the tree hugger groups. They have no concept of the real meaning of conservation.
Our kids are being indoctrinated with socialist ideas from the moment they start school. The idea is that one day they will vote for politicians who want to control every aspect of our lives. My parents thank God, taught me to think and do for myself.
Stalin and Hitler were right. We all will become a socailist or a communist one day.
I'll stop my rant because I need to go fill up the Hummer with gas, buy a carton of cigarettes, and shoot a spotted owl for dinner.
