Darrell,
"Uh...... I hate to tell everyone this, because noone wants to hear it, but Homosapiens are the most invasive species this planet has EVER seen."
I agree 110% (I know it's not mathematically possible - I just wanted emphasis)
"Now I don't think that releasing non-native species is particularly intelligent, but neither are 98% of the people in this world. Whether intentional or not, animal release/escape will happen as long as people own animals."
You are absolutely correct, but this is the logic of those people bent on banning all pets. I think what extremists (on both sides of this issue) fail to realize is that while releases are pretty much inevitable (as long as there is the possibilty of human error) they don't have to be devastating. Consciencious and determined husbandry can go a LOOOONG way toward education (see last point) AND limiting the hazards of pet ownership. We know that we can NEVER eliminate the hazards of driving, but we can certainly mitigate them a great deal so that we can drive a little more safely.
"I don't hear a lot about feral hogs down there? These cause massive losses to native species."
We actually have a hunting season in SC which is stupid IMO. Why protect them with their own season and bag limits? Just let the farmers/country folk kill them all.
"Unfortunantly lawmakers are not always well informed in these cases, and unfortunantly they probably will never be."
They certainly never will be as long as you are not willing to talk to them. If we had a few more people who were willing to tell the truth calmly and logically we could have a lot more educated lawmakers (and maybe even general public). All the lawmakers don't have to be good...just the majority. If you want to make a difference then run for office. And if you REALLY want to make a difference educate someone.

Z,
You may remain skeptical if you wish, however, reality is against you on this one. Iguanas are breeding in South Florida, I necropsied 4 females that contained well over 100 eggs last year. I have observed nesting behavior in wild iguanas and observed young.
In January, I removed a 10 foot 80+ lb. female burmese python from Homestead that contained 41 eggs on necropsy. Nests have been located and there are enough juveniles and young located in the wild and rural areas to provide convincing proof that breeding is occuring.
Boas are also breeding in at least one location in South Florida.
I cannot speak for the presence of monitors, I have yet to see any monitors in the wild in South Florida, but it would not surprise me if it does occur. I have found several species of agamids, tokay geckoes, day geckoes, basilisks, etc. all of which have established breeding populations in Florida. They do not instill the dread in most that a large constrictor might, but are a symptom of a larger problem - all of which are the result of human behaviors.
I also encounter feral domestic cats, various species of birds, turtles, insects, etc. that are non-native and have been intentionally or accidentally introduced.

FL Herp, please note I staretd this thread in December 2008, before HR669 was introduced, warnogn that since HR6311 was dead, thsi article was 'oiling' the way for HR6331 reincarntation and I was right:
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/forums/Experts/40030
Anyway, I am not saying that there aren't some local issues down south in Everglades, but to try federal ban HR669 beacuse of local south FL issue is insane.
I don't dispute you see burmese with eggs insied them, but how many of the eggs hatch and how many of the born are really surviving into adulthood?
How many you see with egss might have been released pregnant? Too many questions....did anybody see Burmese sex in Evergaldes?
