Hi,
The Copperhead that you will find will be the Northern (Akistrodon contortrix mokasin). They are common in your area, but not so easy to find. They are very shy and this time of year they rarely appear in the daylight.
To find snakes, just do what common sense dictates. look under rocks and logs, trash piles, scrap lumber and tin, and so forth. Watch your fingers. Carry a stout hook for flipping stuff, a camera, and a good field guide. I use the Audubon's, but some of us prefer the Peterson's. Either are excellent.
Wishing luck,
f

Thats another thing i was wondering, if u do uncover a copperhead, do they strike emidiately? And yes i have the Audubon Guide, love it. Does this habitat sound good for any other snakes either? i also heard im in a bird sanctuary and that could explain finding that rat snake eating a bird on the sidewalk.

Hi again,
(chuckle) when you find that Copper, most likely he'll run like a thief and you'll be lucky to get a good pic. I'd not worry about striking unless you grab him (not recommended. The results can be most painful). I've caught many Coppers, but I've always been ready for them, or any snake for that matter. An NV, I simply grab and take the bite(s), a venomous, I use the hook.
A Copperhead won't kill you, unless you're sensitive, but it will surely make you wish you'd done it differently. For more on this, I got stupid last April and managed to get whacked by one. Look at the Articals Page under 'Copperhead Bite'. The pics are on the Photo Album Bites page.
luck,
f
PS: Rat snakes are pretty oportunistic feeders. The one you found might have been scavenging road kill. I had one that took to hanging out on my front steps railing, trying to snag humming birds at the feeder.
