Are the East African and West African Gaboon vipers separate species now. Is Bitis gabonica rhinocerous now just Bitis rhinocerous? Thank You....Jeremy

Separate species status has been suggested based on DNA sequence data that show rhinoceros and gabonica to be as distinct from each other as they are from nasicornis. For the time being, this has been reasonably widely accepted in the taxonomic community.

Wolfgang

Interesting...
I hadn't heard that. I guess I haven't been paying enough attention to African vipers. Do you know what paper that was in?
Thanks for the update.

Lenk, P., H.-W. Herrmann, U. Joger & M. Wink (1999) Phylogeny and taxonomic subdivision of Bitis (Reptilia: Viperidae) based on molecular evidence. Kaupia, 8: 31-38.
See http://biology.bangor.ac.uk/~bss166/Updates/Viperinae1999.htm for a summary of findings.

Isn't Kaupia a book. I believe my grad advisor told me to get it whenever I get the chance. It is like orange with a Bothriechis thalassinus on the cover. I will certainly get that whenever I have more money.
Thanks for the references. I look them over more at your site when I get the chance.

No, Kaupia is the Journal of the Darmstadt Museum in Germany. The volume this appeared in is a special volume derived from a symposium on viperid systematics and phylogeny held at the 3rd World Congress of Herpetology in Prague in 1997. It is sometimes advertised like a book by specialist booksellers, but it is indeed a journal.
Cheers,
Wolfgang

I think your grad professor was referring to COPEIA, the journal of the American Society of Icthyologists and herpetologists. *that* is a very interesting journal. makes great fireside reading when snuggled in a blanket for a long winters brumation.

Actually he wasn't referring to Copeia. I am very familiar with that journal as well. Copeia is much smaller than this. The book/journal that was mentioned had a Bothriechis thalassinus on the cover and I believe it was orange. This "book sized" journal or whatever may have been the one mentioned. The name sounds really familiar and I think it was called Kaupia. It had color photos, etc... Either way, I'll be finding out soon enough.
Thanks for the input though,
Robert

The 1999 Kaupia issue with the Bitis paper is purple with a black and white Vipera berus photo on the front. From a research career development and citation impact factor point of view, I always hope everyone else assumes it's Copeia when looking at my CV, but somehow, I doubt it ;-)
Cheers,
Wolfgang
