spiny tail iguanas hibernating.

There is a small colony of Spiny Tail Iguanas living underneath an old farm house in N Carolina and was wondering how this can be? I know they dig deep borrows in the ground and do stop eating around November, but still can't believe they submerge every spring from hibernation. Any thoughts on this?
