I realize that this isnt a question about snakes, but I hope someone can help clear this up for me. I have read numerous articles and asked different people about Gila monsters, and it seems like half the people say that they have a hemotoxin and that the rear fangs are in the upper jaw, and the other half say it is a neurotoxin and the fangs are in the lower jaw. Can anyone help clear this up for me?

The venom is delivered through grooves in the rear teeth on both sided of the bottom jaw in the back of the mouth. The venom is neurotoxic. It is a fairly potent venom, but the Heloderma suspectum must chew to inject the venom. Therefore they usually do not get much into you if you are bitten They don't move very fast, but can when they need to, often raising up like monitors do to make themselves look bigger and sounding quite like any Bitis that you may have ever heard. They can become quite docile in captivity, a friend of mine has one that will let him hold it just like a tegu. I DO NOT ENDORSE SUCH BEHAVIOR!!!!!!!! Since they are still a "HOT" they should be treated with respect as such. They are an amazing animal, but because of all the illegal poaching, most of us will never be able to have one of these magnificant animals.
Email me if I can be of any further assistance.
