I have to write a report on the effects that the Egyptians Cobra's (Asps) venom has on the human body in detail? From initial bite to death....can you help me in determining this information...I know that the Asp venom mostly contains neurotoxin so just focusing on this toxin effects would be sufficient enough...thank you very much,
Andrzej

Naja haje:-potent neurotoxin,yields from 175-300mg,i.v.LD 0.96 mg/kg.estimated lethal dose for a humman is 15-20mg.
Bites usually involve flaccid paralysis, progressing to respiratory distress and eventually death.
Initial symptoms may include, burning pain and slight swelling around the bite sight.Systemic symptoms include facial paralasis(ptosis etc)deafness, mental confusion, muscle twitches and spasms.Respiratory problems begin to arise, paralasis normal begins in the extremeties, progressing further and eventually causing resp arrest.

It's interesting to note that the local swelling involved with N. haje envenomation results not from the toxin, but as part of the body's immune reaction as the venom begins to interact with the lymphatic system.
Other than that, Rabies has it pretty much summed up.
Cheers
