I bought a pigmy at the Columbia show last month, and as usual the guy assured me that it was c/b and ate good. Well I havent been able to get it to eat yet, and everyone tells me that thier pigs eats well for them. So Im wondering if it might be gravid? I just dont know if it is large enough to be gravid, this is my first pigmy and I dont know a whole lot about them. It is approx 18 in long and it is as big around as my thumb.
Thanks for any help. Billy

Billy: Although the pygmy could be gravid, it is about a month or two later than normal for it to be having young.
A lot of snakes become slow feeders right before the winter months. I am guessing that this might be whats going on with your pygmy.
Give it some good hiding areas, and keep trying to feed it, and eventually it will probably eat for you.
Good Luck JohnZ

Billy: You mentioned that the pygmy is 18 inches long, and as big around as your thumb, and that you were not sure if it was large enough to be gravid. That size pygmy is an adult snake, and is fully capable of producing young, although it is most likely too late this year for it to be gravid.
Hopefully, you can pair it up with a similar size snake, and breed it next year. JohnZ

The guy I bought it from said it would eat adult mice, I did'nt beleive him but I tried it anyway. That did'nt work, so I tried hoppers and pinkies, it did'nt want those either. I have not tried lizards yet.

Billy: Are you using frozen / thawed pinks and hoppers, or live ones?
Are the mice white, or brown or black?
Are you feeding in the evening or during the day?
What kind of hide and substrate are you using?
Are you just dropping the mice in, or are you holding them with forceps and trying to get the snake to strike at them?
How warm are you keeping the cage?
Letting us know these items could help us determine what might work to get the snake feeding.
Hold off on trying lizards for now, as there is a risk of giving the snake parasites. Unless the snake is really skinny, it is not going to hurt it to go without food for a couple of months. Sometimes it just takes patience.
Best Regards JohnZ
