Hello experts!
We live in Amsterdam The Netherlands and go on vacation to Florida every year, i have seen during the years somany snakes in Florida but never the eastern diamondback, please, can an expert give me some advice in what is a good place, and what is the best time of the year?
Offcource i have seen the EDB in gatorland, haha, but not in the wild, and that is my wish.
Is the EDB still common in Florida?
Thank You,
Jan.

Jan:
Seeing a eastern diamondback rattlesnake in Florida depends on where you go in the state, and the time of year, and how hard you are willing to work to see one.
In some areas they are still quite common, and in other areas they are very scarce.
Can you tell us what part of Florida you plan to visit, and what time of year? That will help a lot.
Your best bet might be to get together with one of the several members of this site that live in Florida. It is quite possible that one of them might be willing to take you to some of their favorite diamondback areas.
Best Regards JohnZ

Thank you very much John for the reply, normally we stay in Kissimmee, but we drive to several places in Florida, we are planning to come back in march, and i am planning to visit Caladesi Island, from what i hear the EDB is still common on the island, also we go every time to Merritt Island.
But you are right, i have to work hard and someday i will be lucky, that's howit always go!
Best regards,
Jan.

Since you will be staying in Kissimmee, I would highly recommend that you visit the Reptile World Serpentarium in St. Cloud..just a bit east of Kissimmee on 192.Talk to the owner, George Van Horn, while you are there. He might be able to head you in the right direction. General rule, the less populated the area, the better the chances of finding the animals. The preferred habitat is dry..depending on the part of the state, either slash pine/palmetto or pine/scrub oak. Gopher tortoise holes are a big plus. Don't forget to give these animals the respect they are due. A large diamondback has the capabilty of delivering a bite about which nothing can be done.

Another good idea is to flip over fallen road signs on the side of the road. Last year, we found a nearly 6 foot EDB right of the interstate, right outside of Daytona. I agree, it really depends on how hard you want to work to see one.

Thank you Greg for the mail, i have been to reptile world a few times already, at the time i was just interested about snakes and not somuch finding the Diamonback in the wild, later on the EDB became for me one of the most beautifull snakes i have ever seen and after seeing somany snakes in Florida the wish to see one in the wild was growing, i know to be very carefull with this snake and i will never try to pick one up, especially because i am on my own.
Your idea is very good to go back to reptile world and ask for some advice, i will do that.
You have a very nice website with a lot of information, it is in my favorit box.
If i am lucky i will let you know.
Regards,
Jan.

Jan,
The other thing to think about...try going up 27. If in Kissimmee, go 192 west toward Disney if you're located east of Disney...my thoughts are you're probably going to stay closer to Lake Beuna Vista area, head toward Disney...go past it. This will wind up dumping you at 27. Head north toward Ocala and Gainesville. When you've driven a while...stop and ask some locals. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to offer up info on them. I was shocked, when on a whim I asked just one person and he offered up an enormous lead. Of course I didn't follow it, due to riding on a bike, but, none the less, they do offer up info.
It's a nice ride, very rural in most spots...not many people is typically a good sign. I'm planning to head back to this same area in April, so I'm going to make my Christmas purchase of a set of collapsible hook and tongs.
Best of luck,
Matt
