What is the idea size enclosure for an adult copperhead?I intend to modify 40-gallon glass breeder aquariums. Is this too large?
I prefer to always offer my snakes the best I can afford and do not want them cramped up in too small an enclosure.
Also as I prefer semi-naturalistic set-ups, like to have room to offer them various retreat options.
Thanks.

Although your snake may not use the entire enclosure, I think that the larger the cage the better off your snake will be. 40 Gallon tanks are usually fine. Currently I am using a 2ft x 3ft home-built enclosure that is 17 inches tall. Copperheads do not require much height in their cages.
Copperheads also tend to like some sort of hide spot in their cages. I use cardboard shoeboxes mainly. I cut a hole in them and bury them in mulch, leaving only the hole exposed. If the snake poops in the box, I just throw it away. Shoe boxes aren't hard to come by.
Be sure to use a large water bowl that the snake can soak in. Myself and alot of other people have noticed that copperheads have a hard time shedding in captivity. Especially their head.
