Can anyone tell me if Vipera ammodytes can be kept in pairs? Has anyone had any experiance keeping these vipers in pairs? I have a juvenile female at the moment and am playing with the idea of getting a male of the same size to be kept seperate from the female until sub-adult, then being released into the bigger enclosure (herptek viv 90x60x50)together. I want to do this to display the sexual dimorphusism (right spelling??) of ammodytes. My reptile dealer knows someone who has kept his ammodytes in pairs( i didnt ask him what sex though) with no problems and is going to speak to him for me to enquire if it is wise for a novice to do this. Obviously their are more serious safety concerns when dealing with more than one venomous snake in the same enclosure and according to Alex from Romania (Snake 18) who's expertise i respect, these snakes bite eachother when kept together. Obviously the oppinion on this subject is divided so what can you guys tell me? Thankyou, Mark.

Hy Mark,
Yes, when your snake will be bigger they could be kept in pairs. The biting each other events are very rare, but I have observed it. I also know of a case of cannibalism when a bigger neonate ata a smaller neonate, regurgitated it and then died. I know it sounds weird. Just be careful to separate them when feeding them. Mostly, they get a long just fine.
Take care,
Best regards, Alex S.

Thanks for that Alex. I take it they wont breed unless i season them or hibernate them or whatever the correct term is? I have no wish to breed snakes. Is there no way of feeding them at the same time? Mark.

I have another ammodytes related question for you Alex. My ammodytes has a green tail tip. Which sub-species is this and are they smaller when adult then Vipera a.ammodytes? Thanks, Mark.

personally I would advise against pairing of any snakes unless for breeding purposes, it may never happen but they can and do cannabalize there own sometimes, so my advice would be not to house them together, keyz.

Hy,
It is a Vipera ammodytes montandoni if it is smaller and has a green tail tip. If it is as large as an ammodytes and has a green tail tip than it is a Vipera ammodytes meridionalis. montandoni are realy rare and only found in Romania and Bulgaria.
Take care!
Alex S.

In holding areas I kept the ammodytes singly. On exhibit we kept these upwards of 6 to an exhibit at times.
Sal can attest to the pain of watching over these snakes during feeding rounds. These are not to be left unattended for feeds if housed together. Personally, I wouldn't group them up unless I had to.
Just my meager input.
