Collapsible snake hook recommendations?

I've had a collapsible snake hook from Midwest for about 2 years now and have had enough of it, and wondering if anybody knows of another manufacturer who makes something with better quality. It seems that even the slightest amount of pressure causes the hook to start to collapse not matter how tight it is, and the foam handles tear so easily that I refuse to spend another $10 to replace them.

Adam,
I don't think you will find a better quality collapsible.
I really like my midwest collapsible.
There are just some things you don't do with a collapsible like pin and flip cover.
That has been frustrating at times but I have lots of other hooks made for doing those things at home. I remind myself that the purpose of my collapsible is to be able to take it with me and have a hook when space is limited.
If you need a stronger hook, maybe you don't really need a collapsible.

Adam,
I agree with Karl. I don`t think there is a better collabsible hook than the Midwest one. Personaly, I am very pleased of my own. I don`t go field herping with it, I just use it at home. I think that the main reason it was manufactured is to fit the desires of snake keepers.
Take care!
Best regards, Alex S.

Thanks I was thinking this is probably the best I can go with, as you said I don't try to pin or tip things with the collapsible. But even when lifting a heavy snake it starts to collapse or sometimes i'll push bushes to the side to get through thick woods and it just pushes right back in. My main problem though is with the handles i've had them tear about 4 times now, and my younger brother has the same hook with the same problem. Has anybody tried using something other than the foam they sell for a handle, I was thinking of heading over to the hardware store and trying to come up with a better idea to hopefully fix it?

I love my Midwest collapsable hook. There is none finer available on the market. It has been all over the world with me and always works just fine.

I personally do not like the collapsible hook from Midwest. I had it for a few months and used it around 4-5 times and it broke in half. I still like all the products except the field hook and the Collapsible hook. Everything else has been great.

The midwest collapsible hook is a great little hook, if used correctly.
Adam states ``even when lifting a heavy snake it starts to collapse,`` well, that is because it is NOT designed to lift heavy snakes !
It is a great light duty hook for traveling, or keeping in the car or the snake room. It was never ment for heavy snakes.
If you want a collapsible hook, the Midwest is the best you will find.
If you want a non-collapsible hook, then those made by Furmont Reptile Hooks are the best in the world. They are used by many, many zoos. They are not well known, as they dont have a flashy website, and they dont do reptile shows, but they make some durn good hooks, including the classic ``Stump Rippers.``

I definitely like having a collapsible hook because usually when I go herping I carry all my photo equipment and first aid, etc. in a fanny pack and hang the hook around the belt so that I don't have to carry it around the whole time. I have tongs and a regular hook but don't like carrying them around because they just get in the way. I'm not talking about extremely heavy snakes here that make it collapse I would say at the most 5 lbs. for some large watersnakes...not pythons or boas.

5 pound snakes are just too big for that Midwest collapsible hook.
It is designed for 1 to 2 pound snakes at the very most most.
No wonder it is bending.
If used correctly, it works well.

As the members previously stated, collapsible hooks by the laws of physics aren't as strong as a one piece. Why not try a one piece hook? The ONLY field hook I have ever used is the "Stump Ripper" made by Furmont Diversified- www.fieldcam.com/furmont.html Sure, it's a bit "meatier" than Mid-west, but BOY are they sure tough!! (P.S. Go to your local golf store and try using a golf grip)
