I don't know why I never thought of this before. Today my wife gave me one of those thermometers that reads indoor and outdoor. It's wireless and runs on AA batteries, and the 2 remote sensors run on AAA batteries.
I put one outside and one in my herp room. The base/receiver can be mounted or be portable. {I'm the type that will carry it all over the house with me.}
It displays the time, the room temp and then you can choose which channel you want displayed for the 2 remote sensors. As I sit here at my computer, I know at a glance what temperature my herp room is, which is great because my herps are all brumating.
Also, you can set it to alarm if the temperature in your herp room drops too low. AWESOME!

sound like the setup would also be great for measuring the temp gradient in a large cage. What is the sensitivity and price range?

Sensitivity: measures in tenths of a degree.
Price: Anywhere from $25 to $80 depending on the functions you choose. www.Cabelas.com carries 3 different models.
Also, the batteries are supposed to last 6 months.

Here is a website address to the model that I have:
http://www.theweatherplace.com/therweatstat.html
This one is $115.00. I think you can get a better deal somewhere else though.

Radio Shack has one for $30 that has the remote sensor as well as a base with a sensor, displays both local and remote temp and has low and high mem. Will tell you how cold it has gotten or hot since the last time you reset it,
Thats the one I use in my hot room, it was cheap and all I had to do was drive to a local 'Shack.
