Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone has or knows were to obtain info about Maticora? I have only been able to find bits and peices of info, scattered around in many different titles and web sites. Also, pictures would be good. I have seen shots of M.bivirgata only and I am very intrested to see if the rest of the genus can compare to these awesome looking snakes.
Thanks in advance everyone.
Later,
Jeremy
P.S Oh yeah, while we are on the subject of coral snakes, what about Calliophis? Are they similar to Maticora?

Jeremy,
The Maticora Genus(Malayasian or Long-glanded Coral Snakes) consists of five (5) species, * M. beddomei(Beddome's Coral Snake), M. bivirgata(Blue Malayasian Coral Snake), M. intestinalis(Banded Malayasian Coral Snake) , * M. maculiceps(Small-spotted Coral Snake), and * M. nigrescens(Black Coral Snake). The species denoted by an asterisk where formerly of the Genus Caliophis(Slender Coral Snakes).
The Genus Calliophis consists of three (3) maybe (4) species, Calliophis bibroni(Bibron's Slender Coral Snake) Calliophis gracilis(Spotted Coral Snake), Calliophis melanurus(Indian Coral Snake) and ? Calliophis macclellandi(McClelland's Coral Snake).
Further comments by others would be most appreciated.

Thanks Derek! Agreed, hopefully more people will reply to this question and further broaden our minds.
So I take that Maticora and Calliophis are very closely related? Dont they both overlap in the same region? Wonder why Maticora evolved such enormus venom glands. Is there any theories on this?
What about apperence? Do any of the other species compare to the beauty of M.bivirgata? Do you know of any titles that have photos of other species of this genus?
So many questions so little time.
Thank again Derek:-)

Jeremy

Jeremy,
Very little info and less pics available with regard to both Genera. I believe Allen Hunter is this only keeper I know who possesses a Maticora sp.

Hi,
If you guys are interested , I've seen both
Calliophis m. melanurus and C. nigrescens variety khandallensis (currently C. m. nigrescens - tho' I disagree completely!) in the wild. Pictures of both are on the embl reptile database.
C. mel - in Maharashtra, India is a small (less'n 12 inches) snake, C. n. var khandallensis gets much larger and is proportionately a little thicker maybe 21/2 ft long).

Hi Ashok,
Thank you for your comments/observations!
The embl database (elapidae), completely contradicts the taxonomy offered by McDowell(1986, 1987), and Golay et al.(1993), which allocated the species of the Genus Calliophis sensu lato into three genera, including the Genus Maticora for the species Calliophis beddomei, C. maculiceps and C. nigrescens. The 1999 reference that follows their work, and possibly others, Dumerilia, Volume 3, Patrick David & Ivan Ineich, Les serpents venimeux du monde: systematique et repartition, which I chose to utilized for my remarks. The correct taxonomy with regard to the Genus Calliophis, Maticora, and many others, really depends upon whom one follows: Maticora nigrescens (monotypic) no mention of the K variety.
further comments please,
Derek K.
