Nathan, garter snakes often are found close to where people live, especially around areas where there are rocks they can hide underneath. Check the edges of flower beds and creeks. Anywhere two types of habitats come together, like a field coming up to woods, produces an ``edge`` habitat that is often good places for snakes. Garter snakes like eating earth worms, so anywhere there is rich soil with earth worms might be good also. Also, if there is anyplace where you can find piles of old boards and stuff like old tin roofing, or old signs on the ground along a road, the snakes like to hide under stuff like that. But be carefull when you turn over tin and boards, and use gloves, as Venomous snakes like copperheads live under the same stuff, as do black-widow spiders, and scorpeons. You are most likely to find your garter snake in the morning before it gets too hot.
Hope this helps
Best Regards JohnZ

i get a call from my neighbors telling me to take a garter snake from their yard about once a week, try asking your neighbors to call you if they see a snake.
good luck

Nathan: This time of the Year, in the Northeastern States would be your best bet of finding Garter Snakes. Now, if you live in the Southeast, I would recommend the same thing John did. Go looking near Creeks, Ponds, and around Old Fallen Logs and Tree Bark early in the Morning.
Good luck, hope you have fun looking.

another question...
there is 3 achres of woods near my house. But, there is a little football field in the middle and thats where the high school plays so there is almost always somebody there. There isnt a creek there though. The only time there is a "creek" is when it rains hard and all the rain water runs down a little bank. It doesnt rain hard often, only about once every couple mounths. What im trying to say is am i waisting my time trying to find a snake that isnt there or should i steakout there someday.
p.s. this isnt the spot i looked before

it's normaly easier to find a snake where there is water near by, i would still check it out though. some snakes don't need to drink often so they might very well be living in that area, however, don't look in areas where there may be alot of people out. 1)the snakes don't hang out in areas like that and 2) if you catch a snake in the middle of a football game, alot of people would get pretty scared.
good luck
