when out herping and you find a gravid snake...
would you keep it or let it go?
i found a southern king snake (i'm in GA) and it seemed to be laying eggs i let it go, but evryone around here says i should have kept it and let it lay the eggs then incubate them.
but i dont agree with that i think that if i would have caught and kept the snake that with the stress of all that, that it would not be benificial to the mother or the eggs what do you guys think?

Paula, as my good friend Okefenokee Joe often says, ``If you dont need it, leave it.``
Nature has been successfully hatching out king snake eggs for a long time. If you bring the snake home and try to hatch the eggs, there are many ways you could kill the eggs and prevent them from hatching. And like you said, it would stress the female.
In the wild, she will find a place to place the eggs that give them the best chance of hatching.
If you try to hatch them, they can get too hot, or too cold, or too wet, or too dry, or grow fungus and mold. This will kill the developing embryo inside.
And if they did hatch, how would you feed them?
It is best if you do not collect a gravid female snake, as you are not removing just one snake from the wild, but potentionally 10 or 12 snakes.
I think you did the right thing leaving the snake out in the wild.
Best Regards
JohnZ

ditto what Cro said, and you would also need a permit in Georgia for the kingsnake, though I'm sure you have all that paperwork in order and just didn't mention it :-)

its too hard to make sure every egg hatches in captivity. And like john said, the temp would have to be just perfect.
