This is a toughy. 'Nam has a wide and wonderful varity of snakes, both venomous and not. It has at least an equal number of common names for them that change with the teller of the story.
If you could give a description, it might help.

These common names are killers aren't they Phil. I know the Buffalo cobra is a common name for Naja kaouthia in Vietnam, but I haven't heard of a "horse snake". We need to ask some other folks.

PS - I am running both of your articles f.

Hi Chris,
I hate common names. Even if I can't pronounce the Latin - more often than not the case - at least it gives me something I can look up. Anyone caught inventing a common name should be talked mean to in front of all their friends, and have their feelings severly hurt.
I'm delighted that you're going to publish my somewhat immodest tales. I'm kinda / sorta working on another, a bit more serious and filling what I see as a small gap. Dunno when it'll be done. Need a decent photo of my least cooperative, little "pet," and got to do some digging on venom composition, and so forth.
Back to the topic: There are a LOT of fascinating snakes in 'Nam. Unfortunatly, I never got the chance to pursue any of them. There's also some remarkable common names like the "Step & a Half" (my CB handle), which turned out to be both a bush viper and, a Colubrid, I think a rear-fanger of some sort. I saw these dead and both were described as Steppers. I seem to remember hearing of the "Buffalo" but never a "Horse" snake. But I'm sure there is such a thing - maybe even several of them. I think we're beat before we start on this one.
luck,

Hi all,
Ive heard of the Taipan(O.s.scutellatus) being reffered to as "horse snake" due to the fact that they killed quite a few horses back in the 30s 40s and 50s but this was before the popular usage of Taipan for the common name and I guess was the best they could come up with.
Obviously this would not be the species found in Nam but I suspect its some sort of large elapid, perhaps Naja or Bungarus which has been known to kill the ocasional horse. Also, It could be C.rhodostoma or D.actus. Both get large and can definately ruin a horses day.
I doubt its any of the Trimeresurus or Mamushis since I think hundred pacer or two step death have already been asinged to them and Im pretty sure its not a non ven so my guess is one of the above listed.
Looking foward to hearing others input on this subject.
Later,
Jeremy
