what are some key differences between mojave rattlesnakes and C. atrox? I have so much trouble telling them apart.

Hi PV,
These are a little out of my baliwick, but I run across them at the shows now and again. And I've asked the same question. I got told: Look at the scales on the top of the head. The Mojave will have larger plates, sort of like Sistrurus but not as big. Atrox has finer scales.
Of course, in the field, eyeballing head scales can be kind'a exciting, not to say downright, overly thrilling!
Wish I had some more room. I'd like to keep this species.

Besides looking at the scalation on the head, another way to tell the Mojave from the Western Diamondback is by looking at the bands on the tail. On the Mojave, the white bands will usually be about twice the size of the black bands, whereas on the Western, the bands will be about the same size (in width).
