I`v noticed that theese tipes of threads are hanging on well so I decided to ask you guys this question. I`m sure at least some of you were bitten by hots even if it was a dry bite. I`m not sure if this topic has been discused befor so that`s why I`m bringing it up.
So...How many times have you been bitten by a venomous reptile and what were the consiquences ?

This topic has been discussed here before. I kind of doubt that you're going to get much of a response as most of the people here are not too proud of their bites. No one likes to admit it when they have made a bad mistake and this crowd is no different.
I will say that I have been bitten more than once and that I am more or less embarassed to say so. Each time was because of a lack of concentration/preparation/experience on my part. Every one of them was avoidable and absolutely preventable. And expensive....

ill admit it, and the lesson was learned, i pinned and picked up a pigmy rattlesnake, and my gripped slipped and it stuck a fang in my thumb. wasnt too much fun what happened next i think is proabably very common i was in denial that it gave me a wet bite then next thing i knew i was in a cold sweat. luckily it was a pig and not a canebrake. ive also messed up and could have been bitten as im sure all of us have. these cases were with copperheads though. that is why it is so stressed to start with a mild hot, so if you do get bit while slipping up the consequences arent so severe, i learned alot from keeping coppers first.

The only bites I received were from a medow adder(Vipera ursinii moldavica), while force-feeding it and holding it behind the head I accidently stuck my finger in one fang. It didn`t inject venom but I got what little was on the fang and it only stung a bit. A bee sting is hell compared to that. Than i got bit by a baby european adder(Vipera berus) on a finger while handeling it. It was almost as painfull as a bee sting. I did have lots of more menacing close calls. Like when I almost got bit on the chest by a very big cottenmouth at some one`s reptile expozition. That was scary.

I've only been bitten once, and that was enough but I have had one near bite shortly after the first. My bite was from a baby het western diamondback, and man did it suck! Both bites were due to lack of concentration and forthought and maybe just a little bit of stupidity. My bite occured while cleaning out my cages, moving snakes from cage to cage. As we all should know babies do not ride very well on hooks and are much more nippy than adults. Well, while moving the little booger from top cage to the one below it, he started to fall. Normal reaction when somthing falls is to catch it right. Yea, half way there I realized that it was a rattlesnake that was falling....too late, he already had gotten me. He just hung there with one fang caught just below my skin giving me all he's got. Long story short, it sucked.........alot. Three days in the hospital, a large bill and long lasting damage to my finger. It took months to be able to make a fist, and I still have mild nurve damage.
The second near bite was also stupid, not using proper tools and being in a hury. The short version goes like this; snaked pooed, snake is hiding in cave, not normaly an aggressive snake, cant find my poo getter, reached hand in and grabbed dried poo while snake is hiding. snakes strikes and only leaves me with a scratch....how lucky I was! So now I am incredibly cautious and never in a hurry.

I don't really like to talk about this much but I have never been bitten by a venomous snake.
I have had close calls when I wasn't being as careful as I thought I was or when I tried new handling methods that I had seen others use (tailing) but so far I am still being careful enough.

I hear you Anonymous, I've caught myself several times, just about to reach out for a falling snake. I've never done it, but I've come close enough times that I make a point of mentioning it early on when I'm training a new handler. I've also caught myself several times reaching to tail an egyptian cobra and almost reaching for the wrong end (no directional pattern, skinny at both ends, keeping my eye on the end that I thought was the head but was still under a rock). I've only been touched once that I can think of by a hot snake, and I still don't know exactly how I lost track of his head. It was an egyptian cobra, but luckily it was one of those "bluff" strikes, and he went about 3 inches high and just touched my wrist with his neck, mouth closed, no attempt to bite. That could have really sucked, and I don't think I'll forget it any time soon. I've had a few rattlesnakes wake me up by striking and showing that I was only a few inches out of range when I thought I was farther out. So far no bites, and I hope to keep it that way.

Hi:
I am writing the event down for one of the clubs newsletter, this will be brief, so as not to make the article old news.
At 17 I was bitten by a WC captive C.h.horridus as a result of a stupid mistake. Six units of Wyeth A/V and 10 days later I was home.
Over the past 30 years since the bite; I thing about what I'm about to do at least 3 times before entering a cage or making a move; making sure what I plan to do is safe and needed.

Hey guys, first off let me be clear, I have never had a envenamation in my life (knock on wood) hope I never do. At the begining of spring 2004, I was herping in a Swamp not 2 miles from my house, I was walking the bank looking for Cottonmouth. I had just steped over a peace of drift wood and felt somthing hit the back of my ancle. When I looked down I saw a 1 1/2Ft. Cottonmouth laying tucked under the side of the wood. needless to say it scared the crape out of me. Eversence that scare I have desided to wear Snake Proof Boots wile herping. I know some of you have already read this storie because I put it on here about 3 weeks back. This just gose to show that no matter how much time you have spent in the Bush, never trust yourself fuly, I have spent most of my life in the Woods and Swamps around here and this hapend to me, so it gose to show it could kill you. Guys I dont mean to sound like Mom/Dad, but please be very careful, I am sure I aint the only person that somthing kind of like this has hapend to......Happy safe herping Wally

One of those fall and grap events happened to me too. It was my first adder. I was 14 and was at my grandparents place at the mountin side where I caught the snake. I was playing with the snake( it must be said that the snake was very placid; it was a 2ft long adult female Vipera berus) and I put it on a table in our yard. I wanted to pick it up with the hook but I accidentily pushed the snake over the edge of the table. By instinct I reached and caught the snake in my palm mid flight. I than panicked and realised what I`ve don and droped the snake on the concrete. I was happy that the snake didn`t hurt its self and that I didn`t get bit. I didn`t say what I`m about to say because it wasn`t a bite: I was a kid and very curious so I milked the snake(this adder) in a small glass. Somehow I managed to get a significant amount of venom into a cut. I had no local effects from the venom. Not a swolen finger, no local pain. But soon I started to get naucios, to get dizzy, I threw up all night, my temperature was 103 farengheit, I had diareea with blood the folowing day when I went home. I could barely hold my self on my feet. I had aughfull chest pains, it felt like I was being electrocuted at high voltages. When I got home the folowing day I went to the hospital where they checked my heart presure and found out it was pretty low. I had problems with my kidneys and bladder and they gave me 3 tipes of antibiotics to fight off any infection and kept me for 8 days. Honestly, I would have preffered getting a serious bite that all those injections in my but that hurt like hell. I got better and was sent home. No antivenom, nothing. There isn`t any, almost in the whole of Romania. Oh well, that`s it, it wasn`t a pleasent experience but I`m greatfull that I didn`t have a swolen arm or any long-lasting effects from the envenomation. Another close call was when another viper hit my finger with her head. That was also pretty scary. Anyway, I`ve learned from my past mistakes, I take care when I`m handeling my hots not to get hurt and not to hurt the animal either. Also, I never handle the animals except for when I realy have to. Take care everyone. I recomend the new commers to learn from the mistakes of others and not from their own. Happy herping, Alex S.
