I got my first hot the day the wife and I seperated. How many of you got your first hot after a break up? Just curious, I have a feeling my situation is nothing unusual. If you got your first hot when in a relationship, how did you talk your better half into letting you.
Thanks
Garry

Well friend, that makes 2 of us. My wife left me over a Savannah Monitor.. She was gone for 3 months, then I got my first copperhead. We got back together for 6 months. During that time, my collection of hots grew to more copperheads and rattlesnakes. Trying to be the good husband, i asked her permission if I could purchase these animals.. Hell, she even bought me hooks for my birthday. Well, after 6 months, she left again, with another guy, but she told people she was tired of living in fear.. So, if your wife is uncomfortable with them now, she always will be.. Good luck.

My girl bought me a tarantula for christmas 2 years ago. She also bought me a pair of red eared sliders and a very cool fish that sadly died. She goes snake catching with me almost every time. Once, on an expedition, we were about 15 people(just me and a friend were experienced in snake catching) and my girl caught the first snake of the trip. She also caught lots of lizards and even found rare tortoises on some trips. Whatta girl...
I`ll never give a damn about my partners opinion about my passion. It`s the thing I love most and if my "better half" loves me she`ll learn to love the snakes. That`s my opnion.

Garry,
I didn't get into hots after a break-up... My wife was a little concerned but was confident in my ability since I had been doing snake removal for years. I just had never kept one captive. So with that said I ensured her that all proper tools, caging, and a secure hot room would be in place before the snake/snakes would be acquired. I also worked with a couple of people that kept hots to get experience. I feel that anybody that is in a living arrangement with another should first consult them before acquiring a hot snake.Just common courtesy and as always honesty is the best policy.
As far as getting into the venomous hobby after a major break-up; I just don't think I would be in the right frame of mind to take on that task. I heard there is always a first time for anything after a break-up, but I just don't think hots are the way to go. Not trying to start a flame or offend . Just giving my opinion.
My .02,
Todd

Well how strange it is sometimes the differences in peoples lives. I have to say that keeping hots has actually helped my marriage! My WIFE is the one that got me into hots! We keep +/- 80 reptiles in our home and working with them gives us a common ground/interest. I guess you could say I am a very fortunate guy.

I got my first with my exwife. She hated it but was happy for me because she could see how much I loved it" timber rattler". It only took a pair of diamond earrings to convince her to let me have it.

My wife and I have been together since junior high school, she was terrified of snakes so the best way to break a fear is to confront it,I got her a baby ball python for her birthday. After she warmed up to it and fell inlove, her collection of gerbils she was breeding slowly disapeared into the healthy growing ball python. We have been together for twelve years now married for almost seven. Our collection at one point was a little over two hundred snakes,Mostly consisting of corn morphs and king morphs.and a few high end ball pythons we picked up in trades.and lets not forget our savanah monitor Chaos who was given to us by good friend when he was about 8 inches long and now about three and a half feet.So the acual question at hand was Hot snakes. We sold most of our collection right before we moved to florida a year and a half ago and I took a job as a grounds keeper taking care of forteen acres at a retirement community putting me in a perfect position to go herping all day long while I worked.I heard a call over my walkie talkie about a rattlesnake back by the pool,As I rushed over half expecting it to be a pygmy I saw one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen,It was a 5 ft. Eastern diamondback just hanging out.after talking the maintnance Director into not killing it I took some pvc pipe I used for sprinkler repair ran some weedwacker string through it and made a nuse to catch it.safely placed it into a large pail with a locking lid and brought it home to show my wife, she instantly was entranced by its beauty.we then took it to a local bird sancuary and released it to protected land.We then spent the last year building a safe hot room that is almost completed for our collection,we did get a beautful Bitis gabonica rhinoceros that we keep at a friends house who has the proper permits. We can't wait until we finish the room and get our permits so our collection can grow.Other than that we still enjoy going to the local wildlife parks on the weekend just poking around and taking pictures of whatever little creatures happen to cross our paths.

Ive been with my fiance for 5 months now and she has become a herping fool just like me. She is actualy backing me in my idia of starting a hot colection. We did make one compramies, that was, I would build a small out building to house the hots, but that was my idia anyway, I realy would not want to have my venomous in the house for incase of an ascape. So ive been lucky to have found such a good woman "LOL".....Happy herping Wally
