Is tail length an accurate method for sexing this species (or any other rattler) as described by Klauber?
If not, how deep should each sex probe?

Tail length is only useful for people who have spent years probing snakes. As for "how to" probe.
The key word here is "gently". Clean the probe prior to use with an antiseptic, then rinse. Use a lubricant - gently insert the probe toward the rattle -- Approximately - 2 to 3 scales deep is a female, around 9 scales deep is a male.
