Here's the latest in my great dealings with the State of Maryland.
In the mail the other day, arrived a renewal application for my permit. Hmmm, yeah these people are about the brightest I've ever seen. Who is in control of this dumbass department? Sorry for language, but this is truely insane. I can not believe that the very same people who sent me 2 permits before are the same to claim I was illegal...are the EXACT same morons to send me a renewal application. OH MY GOD...get me out of here...please someone just shoot me. To be living amongst the numbskulls running this department is by far more annoying than it would be to be living amongst the felons in prison. At least you know their scrupples.
I am amazed at how enlightened these people really are...by enlightened, I mean their skulls are completely void of any brain matter. This state is the most backwards place I've ever set my feet in. I believe living in West Virginia (take no offense, those of you who may have a an extra appendage) would be more safe, as there are no tards thinking they can make a rule and then turn on it.
I am about to contact the media on this one, since I've kept this on low key away from the media, I think it's time now to show how moronic these people are. Someone wanna give their .02 on this? I'm still debating whether contacting the media couldn't turn out to be the exact opposite of what I want to do it for.
Shocked,
Matt

Matt,
I completely understand your frusration. It is amazing how lost in a maze of their own creation many state government officials have become. They are not even sure what they are doing let alone anyone else in their own dept. That said, I think it would be a bad idea to go to the press. They will paint you as the lunatic fringe... that is unless you know someone you can trust... or someone who has an axe to grind with the state. Either way it would be risky. I don't think you will get the story you're looking for.
Here in NC you need permits for keeping indigenous species of Crotalus, but state DENR and WRC have no dept. to issue these special permits!!??

Try this on for size. When I first wanted to keep venomous here in NM, I of course called the local Game and Fish, was directed to the head of enforcement for the department. When asked about the snakes his first response was "Oh no you can't keep venomous in this state". When he was informed that I had read the laws and when I quoted said laws his response was "Well indiginous animals were OK, I guess". HMMMM could his personal beliefs be coming through here? Then when asked if I could import animals for internet sales he said "No, you can not do that, they are exotic species and not allowed in this state.". I then asked about the exotic species in pet stores across the state (As by the letter of the law these species are included as exotic). He instantly went on the typical "cop defensive" " which ones can you give me names???!!" I replied "Pick any ten, as even an iguana counts as exotic under NM law". He then pulled a bulldog and would not let go, as if I was some crack head he was interogating. "It is your responsibility to tell me which pet stores are carrying exotics" I replied "Um well all of them".
Long story short, he would not let go and would not give me ANY information other than they are all illegal to keep. It was truly amazing to hear him go on about pet shops. Talk about a bulldog, he had some vision of grandeur of going SWAT style into some pet shop (this has happened before with pet skunks, bullet proof armor the whole shebang). It was a truly eye opening conversation.
And please don't call these people retards as it is a SEVERE insult to people who ARE special or "retarded".

Andrew,
I too thought that way, lay low, keep it on an even keel, but then, the slap. The audacity of this piece of mail, the EXACT same person (their permit coordinator), sent this application. This is the same person whom I was issued a permit (as legitimate as could be...even my attorney was shocked by this entire charade) and their enforcement division had no knowledge of this issuance...hmmm, the slap is what has turned this into a vendetta.
Mind you, I know that the media can turn the story against you, the only ones who came out with a negative against me in this, was the public information officer for said DNR...what a hoot that was. Made me out to be some villainous shyster. There were the local tv station that jumped on the wagon of this same pio, however, the local papers printed it correctly...of which those tv stations made their corrections.
David,
I think you saw the same thing that I did when this old codger came to my house to do an inspection (old state trooper...if this gives you any pictures). Upon entry through my LOCKED door to my hot room, adorned with signage of what lay ahead, just inside, the first cage, a pair of gaboons...the occifer, says, that's an unsual copperhead. Oh yeah, I got a live one here. When all was said and done, he told me how secure the place was and how my paperwork was all in order. Checked my permit, etc and said thank you. 3 weeks later, this same smuck, is the one who came in like a commando (swat team and all) waiving a piece of paper saying, I've got a warrant to seize...oh yeah.
I know what you were going through. The short and skinny...don't trust the same government to know their own laws. The only state I can see in this entire country that has one ounce of my respect at this point, Florida. A well defined permitting system, along with the requirements layed out for anyone to see. There's no references to some hidden passage in an old bill that was passed in 1883 or anything of that nature. And they say the south is dead...not in my book.
Cheers,
Matt

I would like to throw out an idea for you folks fighting the various State Wildlife Agencys.
I have a friend who lives in extreme South Georgia, right up against the Okeefenokee Swamp. Well, many years ago, he wanted to have an alligator farm, but it was prohibited by State DNR Wildlife Law.
So, he ran for election for the State House of Representitaves, and was elected. Since he lived in a small town, in a small county, he was able to do this. After he was elected, he introduced legislation that would allow alligator farming by paying a yearly permit. The legislation passed. He now owns an alligator farm, and is retired from the State House. Because he used the election process, he was able to introduce legislation in his favor. Now, we have a lot of alligator farms in S. Georgia, all due to his actions.
Some of you who live in small towns, and small countys, might be able to do the same thing, and actually get elected.
I live on the outskirts of a large metro area, and would not be able to get elected to the State House or State Senate, but if I lived in a tiny rural town or county, I would run for election. Then, if elected, I would introduce legislation concerning changing our restrictive venomous reptile laws.
What ever the State House or Senate passes controls outfits like Game and Fish.
I find it interesting that one of the few Venomous Snake Permit Holders in this state just happens to be the son of the long time mayor of a backward little town in Walton County, GA called Loganville. Wonder how that happened? Possible political influence????
Anyway, for you folks who might be in the right areas, look into becoming a State Senator or State Representitave, as these are usually part time jobs, and you just might get elected, and just might be able to push legislation that would benefit all the venomous keepers of your state.
Just an idea I thought I would throw out for you all to chew on.
Merry Christmas

Being a state Rep would be real cool.......BUT, this is a small town, with a LARGE population of senior citizens. Do you really think they would elect a 38 year old. No. Not just me, but, any 38 year old. The position is held by a local optometrist who gets their ear every time they need a drivers liscense or new glasses. I have tried to get HIS ear as a customer....no dice..not even a nibble. You gotta remember where I am. Rural NM is definitly a "good snake is a dead snake" area. We still have a local roundup, still have sherrifs with cowboy hats, and still have yokels who like (actually like) killing snakes. All this is OK, but, I can't keep animals indiscriminately. If I killed them and skinned them I'd be a hero, when I remove one from a property I'm just that "wierd snake guy". If I was to come up and just kill it instead of catch it I would be freaking superman to these backwards people. Now I am a local too, but, one with an education. So please don't take this as an excuse to bash the rural areas. EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION.
Heck, maybe when I'm in my 60's I'll be a likely candidate, but, til then I'm stuck giving lectures, catching rescues, and trying to educate these ignorant yokels.

I live up the way from Matt, and since I moved here I have sold all my venomous. I live in a county with no restriction's on other snakes, except hot's. I have been harrassed by the local police because I have 12 reticulated python's. Dnr and animal control have been called on me and never any charges filed. The county police still bother me and have now turned to child protective services. This is a pain in the arse but so much fun every time I can look these cop's in the face and laugh. Good luck to all fighting tha MAN, and keep up the struggle!!!
