Please keep in mind that these laws tend to spread "they passed a law, we better too" so everyone should be making it known that they do not support such a ban, and will no longer vote for anyone who does.

It is likely the same groups (API, HSUS, PETA) getting the bills introduced. This bill is identical in wording to the NY bill when it was first introduced back in 2001/2002. I hope S. Carolina can squash this rubbage before it gains a foothold.
Here in NY, even after 1 year of our bill being passed, we have no permit system in place(outside of what was already regulated under endangered species, i.e., C. horridus, S. catenatus and all crocodilian spp.)
Good Luck South Carolina keepers!!

You mean the NY bill? Yeah, it did pass in NY..not surprising, given how "WELL-INFORMED" our legislators are.
But, yeah, it passed here. It was identical in wording before it was re-written several times. The big snafu is rather than a flat permit fee, its $170/animal every two years.

From my laymen prospective, this appears to be the identical bill that was proposed in SC in 2004. In 2005 it was sent to committee for study. Now, this action is usually is the death of a bill, however, it appears in this case the committee has returned with a definitive decision and it was an almost total ban on venomous reptiles, not to mention the pythons and crocs.
Something that is unclear to me, has this bill been passed into law, or is it coming up for vote? In the language I read on SC website, it stated this would go into effect on July 1, 2006. That leads me to believe the vote has been held and passed. If that is the case, it’s all over but the complaining. If someone has better information, please enlighten me.
This law is going to be a logistical nightmare. The keepers of venomous reptiles and crocs are limited in numbers. We all know that, but how many thousands of people in SC have Burmese and Reticulated Pythons? Where are those animals going to end up? And of course this is going to greatly affect two of the top names in venomous Herpiculture. Marty Snipes and Roark Ferguson are both centered in SC. The language of the bill gave vague reference to a permitting system, but even if they can obtain the permits, the base of there consumers is dead. It would probably not be cost effective to keep up the permits. Also liability insurance was mentioned. My state, GA, also has that clause in the permitting system and the policy is almost impossible to get. NO ONE in the insurance business wants to write a policy on venomous reptiles, believe me, I have checked.
On the one bright note, due to the wording, the false water cobra is still completely legal in SC. I guess we will see a huge interest growth in that species over there.

Email a link to that article on the site to everyone you know. If people don't know about it, they can't/won't do anything about it.

Good point Chris. I have already spoken with Roark about the proposed ban. I hope that with his help we can centralize/concentrate our efforts to get the desired results we all want. I am currently trying to round up all herpers in my area (The Upstate of S.C.)to let them know what is being proposed and to enlist their help in abolishing this proposed ban.
I will keep the site updated and informed on the current status of this ban. I was just astonished that you guys(Al and Chris), found out about it before I did when I reside in the state. Thanks for the heads up!
Your Ally,
Todd

I talked with Mardi and Roark today, the bill has not been voted on as of yet. There is still a chance to get it voted down. I have written a letter to Senator Thomas. I will email and post mail copies to him. Every little bit helps, but contact from SC residents will carry more weight. Everyone in that area needs to mobilize as fast as possible. We need handouts to distribute this weekend at the show. Should outline the bill and give the contact information for the legislators.
