Can anyone tell me if there is a website from which i can download a venomous snake-bite protocol for Copperheads? I have them for Vipera ammodytes and Crotalus mollossus but no copperhead. The very good site ive been using is http://www-surgery.ucsd.edu/ent/DAVIDSON/Snake/index.htm but it doesnt include North American Copperheads for some reason! Is that because the bite from copperheads arent considered potentially fatal? How do i help hospital staff to treat me in the event of a bite if i cant hand them a protocol like i have for my other 2 species. I have printed my protocols and had them lamenated and have sent my local ER copies and kept copies myself to hand over to an ambulance team should any accidents happen. I have been told copperhead anti-venom isnt usually administered but as i live in the uk and hospital staff are not accustomed to dealing with venomous snake-bite, unlike the states, i would feel better if i had a protocol to hand. I'm aware a bite from a copperhead causes severe swelling and pain so how exactly is that treated? Thanks, Mark.

I had the bad luck to be bitten by a northern copperhead last year. The doctor's had no exp with snake bites so I was transfered to marylands shock trama. In the online text for the hospital they have the protacal for a copperhead bite. The bite is very painfull and starts swelling fast. The best treament for a healthy person is, Iv drip, with pain med's. Be careful you are not allergic to morphine, I am. They kept me for 15 hours then sent me home. No insizing of the wound because that can be more harmfull than the bite.
