I know there are a few folks on here that have AZA experience, but does anyone have any experience with the DC Zoo herp folks? Looking for any info as I may be spending some time there.
Thanks,
Matt Nordgren

Matt: I do not know any of the folks working in the Reptile Department of the National Zoo anymore, but in the past, the people who worked there knowledgeable, and had some good exhibits.
The unfortunate thing about the National Zoo is that the reptile and amphibian collection is very small. That zoo cares more about birds and mammals than reptiles. You will probably see more different types of reptiles and amphibians at a SC reptile show than you will see at that zoo...

There are always a number of docents and other folks running around the herp building that you should be able to stop and get a conversation going with. As far as staff goes, they are stretched quite thin and setting them up for random visitors is not easy on their schedules. As far as their collection goes, it all depends on what you want to see. If you want to go to a herp show and see morphs then so be it. But they have a nice rounded collection of the herps from rattlesnakes to komodos, some crocodilians and the like. Keep in mind that the DC Zoo is an old establishment and while it does indeed have some newer exhibits, some are well dated too.

Thanks guys, by spending time there I mean that I may be filling an intern position there for the summer. Looking at the list they have posted on thier web page, I have kept alot of what they say they have, but I'm really excited to see and hopefully work with some of their special stuff, like Komodos. Someone told me they have/had Sphenodons? Does anyone know the Maryland laws regarding captive hots?
Thanks,
Matt
