Late summer '04 I caught the animal I refer to as "Grandfather" here in my stomping grounds on the N. OBX. He, or more likely she, was 4 1/2 foot and bigger around than my bicep. That is the largest I have laid hands on in more than 20yrs. I released it. I see it in the same area on occasion.

HELLO TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER...
Where are you located? I have come across three large cottonmouths in the past 9 months or so. They were in the Steinhatchee area of Florida. I did catch the largest I saw, and it measured 49 inches. The snake was released after we looked it over because I do not have any desires to keep such a monster. No pictures because the weather was rainy and we were walking a stream looking for chicken turtles. If I come across another, how can I reach you and will you come to get it? I am just south of Gainesville in Ocala Florida.
They are far and few between, but they are there in the remote places in Dixie County where rednecks are scared to go. :)

In the early 70's, I was frequently herping in Palm Beach county, Florida just west of the intersection of Lantana Rd and US 441 (it's probably a residential development now) and I captured and released several (6 or 7) cottons in the 5 ft+ range and one, in particular, that was just under 6 ft. Actually, in terms of "largeness" and girth, it was Gaboon-like, however, it's disposition was that of a rabid dog. Now living in SW Florida, I have yet to see one in excess of 3-1/2 ft.
I'm sure the monsters still exist !!
