I look at it this way. How many zoo's or lets even make it more simplified, how many people would be keeping reptiles and amphibs today if it was not for the private non-schooled keepers who worked with species and learned by trial and error to keep them alive and well in a collection. Is thier hard work and research any less valuable than that of a person who spent 8 10 or 12 years?
I would concider those people more a herpetologist than some of the people with a PHD in front of thier name. Its not a title that makes the man its the devotion and ability to learn and share the knowledge that gets my respect.

Well, a penny's worth: I have dabbled in astronomy, with no technical or academic training, though plenty of self-directed study. If I spot a new comet (as many amateur astronomers have) does that mean it doesn't exist because a "professional" academic astrononer did not see it first? In fact, there is a self-taught amateur in Australia who hold the world record for discovering new supernovae. Fact is, a fellow named Darwin had no hard academic training in biology . . . did OK.

Herpetology enthusiast?!! Would that "title" be apt enough to describe someone like myself who has been keeping reptiles for the past 32 years? Probably. Would I consider myself a herpetologist? No. My girlfriend/wife has a Marine Biology degree from Texas A&M University yet she can't identify fish species as readily as I can. I used to deckhand in my younger days on private fishing charters. I gained a lot of experience about the nuances of particular targeted fish species that we were trying to catch. She couldn't gain that experience from a classroom. However, she knows more about marine microrganisms, water paramaters, etc... You see where I am going with this?

WOW! I just read all the posts on the survey. I want to apply with Mr. McKay PHD to get my official recognition... LOL. I am not a professional Herpetologist, but because of my efforts to save this hobby in NC I associate and communicate with many of the top Herpetologists from around the state and country... they all use scientific names. But maybe Duke, UNC, NC State, NC Aquarium, NC Museum of Natural Science, NC WRC... etc. are not accredited at the level Mr. McKay PHD is. I am a former Special Ops soldier. I know Chris is too... and my gut instinct tells me Mr. McKay PHD is the "wanna be". Mr. McKay PHD please feel free to come down off your high horse and prove me wrong. Academic arogance, whether contrived or real, is very unattractive and downright rude.
Learn some manners,
Andrew
