Well, I spent the evening handling some snakes in a church.

i'm bringing some nerodia of mine to the blessing of the animals and i'm gonna be giving a little lecture to the kids on how snakes have been represented as evil (the snake in the garden of eden) and say some stuff to the kids about how god loves all his animals and none of them are truely "evil"

Chris,
Religion isn't my strongpoint, Chris Harper can tell you a lot more about the Christian bible than I could. I did however read the thing at least once. If I were confronted by a Christian saying snakes were evil, I'd say "Really? In John 3:14 Jesus said 'As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up'..." so if it was ok for Moses to go herping.... so shall I :-)
By the way, if you're in Jacksonville you really should meet Karl Betz. He's in the navy but will be retiring shortly and lives near you.

It really frustrates me when people - "Christian" or otherwise, try to use the Bible to argue that snakes are 'evil'. As was mentioned in a previous reply, after creating the world and everything in it, God said "It is GOOD" (Genesis 1:25). He did not say "It is good...except for the snakes" (or sharks, or spiders, etc.).
Secondly, when Moses wrote the book of Genesis I do not think he expected his readers to picture an actual TALKING SNAKE (?) tempting Eve. This is a SYMBOL (representing Satan). It is absurd to moralize animals - this is possibly the worst form of anthropomorphism and Disney-esque thinking. Humans are the only creatures who are (argueably) moral. The rest are simply trying to survive and pass on their genes.
Thirdly, No one seems to notice two obscure passages in the Book of Proverbs. "There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, THE WAY OF A SNAKE ON A ROCK, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a maiden. (Proverbs 30:18-19) This is attributed to 'Agur, son of Jakeh' ( whoever that was - one of the first herpers apparently!) I think this illustrates (celebrates?) the inherent mystery and beauty of snakes. The above quotations are taken from the NIV version of the Bible.
In conclusion, the use of the Bible to portray snakes as evil is misguided and ridiculous, in my opinion.

ya know, I can honestly say, I've talked to thousands of people at various displays and talks and such. I've never really run into "snakes are evil" from a religious standpoint. I've run into "the only good snake..." many times. I've heard "Boy, yo bread aint done" and "are you CRAZY?" a few times, but if I ever do run into it, I'm loaded for bear :-)
One thing I have noticed. People in downtown Atlanta have a much stronger dislike for snakes than people in Waytheheckcross Georgia. People in truly rural areas that encounter snakes a lot more often tend to coexist with them a lot better.
