Lake Wiley SC has finally been able to prove the existance of local Alligators through video tape. Several size gators have been reported being seen this summer. At first I would have assumed they would be caimans purchaced at pet stores and released once they had attained large sizes and couldn't be given away. However, the paper identifies them as alligator mississipensis and due to the 8 foot length, that would make since for some of the sightings. It would be realistic that the were caught on the coast and released once they got to big to handle. I doubt they would migrate so far inland and north. Also, what gives a wildlife officer the right to shoot and kill an 8 foot alligator that is federally protected and is posing no immediate threat just b/c it is 8 feet like the article says. Just b/c people at lake wiley aren't accustomed to having these guys around doesn't mean they have any less right to exist than in places where they are more common and accepted all along the coast of SC. Also I have heard rumours of dead pirahana being found in the same lake. That would give rise to the theory that some idiot is intentially trying to create problems. Any opinion appreciated.....Ian

There is a good chance that the gators in question were there without human assistance. They're found in Georgia up to Macon and Augusta. Macon is over 150 miles inland. Augusta is a long way inland as well. The drought could cause them to go places they normally wouldn't.
This is not to say that you can rule out human intervention, but it's difficult to prove.

I find that possibility somewhat unlikely. Augusta is far inland but lake wiley is just south of Charlotte nc where I live and a gators been reported in lake norman to the north of Charlotte near statesville. Were talking a 3-4 hour drive from the coast.

I deal with a great deal of reptiles in my line of work(Alligators included). I think your problem is more of natural causes. However a thought is just ones opinion. It does not seem unlikely that someone would place them there. my dad lived in a subdivision once.
where this kid that lived next door got whatever he wanted. Well at the time he wanted two rattlers and a coral snake. the boy let them go when he got tired of them.Has your fish and game department thought about hiring a professional to extract the gators. If you wan't to reply to me, my e-mail address is md50doc@aol.com

No I don't think someone should extract them. Even if they were falsy indroduced, they deserve the right to exist if they aren't causing problems. I also don't bel
ieve they migrated so far inland as lake whiley.
