This is not a question but, information I received on the status of the timber/canebreak in the state of Va. I applied for an endangered species permit to keep one pr. of timbers in my private collection(you have to be very specific when you do this). After about 4 weeks I received a phone call from Kathleen Quindlan of the VDGIF and she stated to me that "even though the timber and canebreak are classified as the same species, only the canebreak is listed as endangered an protected and that I didn't need a permit to keep timbers".END QUOTE! Somebody check it out and post a response. Let's see if you get the same answer.

Hi Skeet,
Though I havent looked into this topic myself, I do have a buddy who has contacted F&G and they gave him the same answer. It is our belving that because the canebrake only ranges into the tide water area here in Va and the timber is found through out the moutainous regions in the state, this is the reason for just the canebrake being protected.
Though I strongly agree with the seperation of the two, I really wish they would be lumped into one species and both have equal protection throughout their range. Not trying to say you or ZI shouldnt be able to keep one but as we both know, these two form/subspecies are in dire need of some protection
Well, I hope this helps clear thing up.
Take care.
Later,
Jeremy

That is not the exact info that i had recieved. over the summer i was doing some independent reasearch with kenny presgraves (working under Dr. A. Savitsky) who is a masters student and park ranger. i was informed that if i possessed either C.h.horridus OR C.h.atricaudatus that i would be fined and they would all be confiscated. this was in tidewater and i know that here in the commonwealth the rules are different in each county but since these animals were federally protected i was told that it would be illegal for me to keep either species without a research permit. anyone else in Va heard anything about that?

Ps the Northernmost populations of C.h.atricaudatus have become pretty much extinct this summer. some isolated populations in Newport news and hampton VA (yes canbrakes WERE quite common on the penninsula) were bulldozed for HR center parkway and kiln creek. at the beginning of the summer canes seemed very common but once bulldozed i found it hard to score Nerodia even in these areas.
