I got a set of Gentle Giant tons for christmas, the only thing they have on them is "pro line" under the Gentle Giant logo. Is there a way I can tell if these are the ones with the thicker tubing or not? Thanks.

I have the Super Tong option on mine and there's no way to see the wall thickness except where the jaws and handles are mated to the tubing. There's a bevelled edge to my tubing. Does yours have this? If so, then I suppose there is no real way to discern the difference.

Another tip for this nice addition to your tool collection: Buy a jar (from Home Depot) of the liquid latex dip (some tradesmen use this as a way to mark their tools, but also to add a non-slip grip). It comes in different colors. Redip the top jaw, and double dip the handle grips. This adds to the toughness of the latex end. It also adds something to the aluminum handles for those hot summer days when you're out in the field...a better non-slip grip.

Matt, you're a genious! I never even thought of measuring the top and bottom of the bevel! They're the super-tong option. Thanks for the insight!

No problem Scott...glad I could help. I happened to notice your pic with the Michigan hat...but you go to school in Texas. Hmm, perhaps Texas isn't dead after all...joking (a quick stab after the Rose Bowl game yesterday). My heart dropped after seeing Coach Carr handing that game to Texas.
I'm heading down to Houston here on Thursday, and plan to do so many more times until the end of August. Have any good spots to recommend? My girl's son is moving down there for the summer and told me of an enormous WDB he encountered last summer while at Galveston Bay.
Cheers,
Matt

Haha, honestly, the hat was $5 at Walmart and I needed one! I'm in Houston right now and I have herped it for 18 years. Galveston is definatly your best bet if you're looking for rattlers. I am from a community in northern Houston called Kingwood and the woods around here are good for hongnoses, racers, ratsnakes and the occasional copperhead. The "drainage ditches" and "creeks" around here are literally LOADED with diamondback watersnakes. Big, Smelly, and Mean, they're a great alternative to venomous, because you REALLY don't want to take a hit, but if you do, you won't die. Good luck finding something!
