i'm in construction, and i've always heard about the guys who clear the land coming across rattlers....especially on the mountains....well, i've had no luck when looking for them there, but today, a VERY young canebrake rattler found it's way into the middle of a large neighborhood right up on the house's door step we were in.......that area is being destroyed for more houses, and their den sites are being destroyed as well, the whole mountain will be a giant neighborhood sooner than later, so he's a resident at my house......didn't figure he'd have a chance in that area......he'd just ate a meal too, probably one of his first few at that.....very pretty little snake

Good save Ricky. It probably would not have survived a relocation. Timbers are the least likely to make a new home, especially in Oct.

Yes, Good save Ricky...
It's always preferable to leave a "wild snake" in the wild but when their habitat is being developed saving them is the right thing to do. Only a 50/50 chance of survival if they are relocated.
Great that the little beasty ate for you already.
Very Cool!

yeah, that whole area is the "$500,000 house and up area" and we have so many houses to do there it's ridiculous....this area is really growing and that's a scenic place......too bad they're destroying the wildlife with it......supposedly there are tons of timbers there....a guy is said to hang the dead ones over his fence when he bush hogs.....if that's the case, i'm gonna find the guy and do something.....i just don't know what.....like you said, relocation is iffy, and i sure can't keep a lot of snakes, but i don't wanna see a bunch die for the sake of housing development

Why not get a bunch of herpers togeather and have a scout before they destroy den sites and rescue as many snakes as possible? The plans have been drawn for the clearing I assume so get a copy of where they will be clearing and check any den spot's before the loaders and graders get in there. Just a thought.

it's not a small area, we're talking a few MOUNTAINS that are being eaten up as fast as you can count.....60+ builders building neighborhoods left and right......we work for one of them, and they keep us VERY busy.....it's bouncing around between 55 degrees and 80 degrees too, and soon to get cold enough to force them into brumation.....they're still on a nocturnal schedule for the most part, but starting to look for warmth during the day, but the weather is so up and down that they're undpredictable.....i personally don't go herping with people and it's hard to find the time for it.....
