Is there any way to prevent the copperheads in the ditch adjacent to my yard, from moving into the yard? A survey crew has seen about 30 in that area in the last month. I have heard that mothballs repell them, or sulfur outlining the yard. Can I do anything, short of moving, to protect myself from an invasion? I have small grandchildren and am fearful for them to go out onto the patio!

Well if you lived in Central Missouri, I would remove them for you, but I'm sure you don't. I really don't know much about methods to repel snakes, but just in my opinion, it seems if they really wanted to come in your yard they would. So I recommend finding someone that is familiar with handling venomous snakes and having him or her remove as many as possible from the area and relocating them to an unpopulated place. Of coarse if you don't know anyone that is experienced in this, then I guess you would be stuck to other methods. Keep in mind, that snakes are predators and if there is any kind of a rodent population around your house then this may be what is drawing the snakes close. Maybe there is someone else out there that can give you a better answer on some methods of keeping them away.

I have heard of the mothball and sulphur methods also, but not sure how effective they are .I have a 5 year old and i have had to remove several copperheads from my yard .Other than having someone remove them ,I would check with your local game warden and see if they have any recommendations.Dion

I have had some sucess with moth balls around my house to keep copperheads away but the downside is that moth balls are poisonous to animals as well as humans. I have had less sucess with the mothballs around my chicken coop I guess the temptation is still stronger than the chemicals. Hope this helps!
