Type "mites" in the search engine on this site. There have been several posts on that subject in the past with alot of good info. I suggest checking www.herpo.com and look under mites. The method he describes I've had great success with for years. Marty

I have several procedures that I have used in the past during a mite outbreak. I have used provent-a-mite, Which I spray down the cage and it kills mites in the cage and kills eggs. Then I will use a mixture of 75% water and 25% listerine which can kill mites. That is what I have used in my cages. Now you can also get a lice killer at a local drug store which works too. Now I have just found out about something B.W. Smith use to get rid of mites. What he does is buy what are called preditory mites which kill and eat the mites that feed off snakes. They do not harm the snakes and what happens is that the eat all the mites and then eat other preditory mite.

Yes but only relatively harmless but digusting food mites it was suggested to me to use a animal flea/mite controller called Frontline now I am not telling you to use this product but I can say that in my experience before using it was that they ALWAYS managed to re-infest , I tried this and since I have ha dno ill health from my reptiles from using this product and also a 100% eradication of the little sods.
If they are on the snake IE feeding on its blood Then wipe the snake down with a cloth that has been sprayed with frontline and obviously clean all vivs etc hope this helps p.s. use the spray not the spot on! Also if you keep arachnids DONT use it anywhere near them as they WILL be killed.

Thanks guys, I am also dealing with such an experience.
What if the cage with my infested snakes is about 10 feet away from my arachnids ? Could I use frontline spray safely ?

Easiest and most effective way to kill mites is by using a 99 cent bottle of Canola oil or peanut oil from the store. Rub your snake down and this stuff sufficates mites. Best treatment I have ever used. Bryan

Alex: Cover your arachnid cages with some plastic sheeting before you use the spray on the snake cages.
After the spray is dry, it should be allright to remove the plastic.

Alex definitely follow cro's advice with the sheeting and a huge amount of ventilation, But if there is just one hole then you could be looking at the whole lot being killed. Frontline really is the best stuff and you can also spray the snake and viv insted of having to handle them. you should have total eradication in about 2 days, if the spiders can be covered for that length of time im not sure as I know they require humidity and ventilation best advice would be to move them if possible.

Provent-a-mite which sells for about $20. a can works great. In the camping section at Wal-Mart look for bug spray and for a bottle labled "permanone" the active ingredient should be .05% permetherine. It is the same as provent-a-mite but only costs $6.
Remove the snake from the enclosure along with the water bowl. Clean the cage and replace the substrate. Spray the substrate and the inside cage walls with the spray. Let it dry COMPLETELY. Replace the snake and water bowl. Within a couple days, all the mites will be gone and the cage will be totally mite free for 30 days after each treatment if done correctly.
I also use "Reptile Relief" from time to time which can be bought at PetsMart and other fine retailers for about $7. a bottle. It is used to spray directly on the snakes to kill the mites. Just remember that these are poisons and can kill insects and spiders as well as your snakes if not used properly!!!!!!!!!!!!!
