what is your opion on carrying snakes around. I generally use a big bucket but some people say that will hurt them so they use a snake bag. But...the snake bags can get expiensive. Other people say it depends on the snake. But, now, im asking you guys...

i use old pillow cases, they are cheap and work just the same, when carrying hots, i use a $5 kevlar snake bag that i got from the midwest table in daytona, not expensive at all. i also use the bags for frogs, salamanders, newts, and lizards, i made a special collapsable wood box for turtles and i bring a cat carrier when i know that i'm gonna find a small gator- i normally get calls for reptile rescue for gators, i don't normally "catch" them, just move them from peoples yards.
you may know more than most people out there but you still have alot to learn, i'm not trying to be mean but keep in mind that as soon as you know it all, you learn 10 new things, i had the same attitude when i started herping so i'm just warning you.
keep at it,
Chris Hartmann

i know, im not any where near an "expert" in snake herping, but, i hope to learn as i go on. But, im trying to make a point that just because im young doesnt mean i dont know "anything" not "everything"
oh, and im not trying to be a teacher or anything, but "alot" is two words and is spelled "a lot"
my english teacher would have your head on the corner of her desk if she saw this...lol

anyway, thanks for your opinion. Where do you get those snake bags. The only time i can get them is when there is a reptile show here... But thats been about 3 years ago.
But, ill probably stick to the pillow case thing...thanks for the idea...

Like Chris said, old pillow cases work good for snake bags. Just be sure to check them for weak stitching and holes. If a snake finds a tiny hole in a bag, it can often push against it and enlarge it enough to make an excape. Also, you can fold a snake bag and carry it in a back pockett or looped through your belt.
There are times that a buckett can work good also, like when you are road cruising for snakes where you have to quickly scoop a snake off of a road before cars come. You can put it in a bag later. Just make sure the plastic buckett is clean and has stuff like paint or whatever it had in it all washed out.
I have built several wooden boxes with hinged lids and a latch that I keep in the car. I can use them to quickly scoop a snake into from the road, and can use them to hold snakes in bags. I will try to take a photo of one sometime soon and post it, as they are easy to make. They also make a good temperary cage for a snake untill you set up a permanant cage for them.
I bought some cheap small plastic critter cages at petsmart, for like $4.00. They have a hinged lid and a carry handle. Surprisingly, they work well for collecting small frogs and lizards that I use to feed Coral Snakes and small Pygmy Rattlesnakes. I find my- self carrying them into the field more and more often.
Here is a sort of funny story about snake bags with holes in them that I will tell you guys. I was once hunting with some friends in West Texas in the Big Thickett. Well, we found a Western Coral Snake under a rotting log. We did not have a snake bag to put it in, so one person ran back to the car to get one. Well, there was this snake bag in the car that had a hole in it. I had tied the bag into a big overhand knot in the middle so it would not be used because of the hole. I thought others would notice the knot and know not to use that bag. Well, the guy we sent back to the car found that bag, and untied the knot and brought it to us. We thought is was a good bag with no holes in it. We put the Coral Snake into it and put it into the car. From there we snake hunted up to the Houston Zoo, and brought all the snakes we had caught into the reptile building so they would not cook from the hot sun in the car. Well, apparently, that Coral Snake decided to excape through that bag when no body was looking. We left Houston Zoo, and on the way further west were checking the snakes, and found the Coral Snake bag empty, and the hole in it! Well, we about strangled the guy who had grabbed the wrong bag with the knot in it that he should have known not to use. We did not know if the Coral Snake was loose in our hotel room or in the car or what. All the rest of the trip we had to be carefull, because we thought the Coral Snake was loose in the car. Anyway, a couple of weeks later we got home and got a call from the reptile keepers at the Houston Zoo, and they had found this Texas Coral Snake just sort of crawling around the floor in the reptile building! They thought it must have come in an open door from outside, even though it was way far north of that snakes range by like 200 miles! I did not tell them until just now with this post about the snake bag with the hole in it that had been in their building and the missing Coral Snake we had lost ! But, I think we solved the mystery of where the Coral Snake went went.
So, lesson learned, carefully check your snake bags for even tiny holes in them, and if they have holes, throw them out! Dont trust others knowing that a bag with a big knot tied in the middle means not to use that bag!
Sorry about the long story, but I hope it serves a purpose in helping people here learn !
Best Regards JohnZ

lol, that would be pretty funny to watch. For the story, Unfortunally, i am too young to drive. I wish i could go places other than i can reach on my bike... (and if your wondering how i get them home, i call my dad and he gives me a ride... Oh and John, I found a new spot, i was riding my bike around my neiborhood when i saw a sign that said no outlet... i looked at the road and after 50 yards, it turned into a dirt path.. i followed it was the path when i saw a snake race across the path. Unfortunaly i couldnt find it, BUT, it took me to a large area of loose malch and top soil. it must have been a dumping area.. I looked around in the piles and saw a black rat snake, but i only had a little bucket, so i let that one go... I followed it untill it took me to a mountain. I didnt think i could find anything on the mountain because it was pretty steep.. i had trouble getting up it.. So anyway, i got to the top and there was a whole lot of rotted logs, i was flipping them over, i must have flpped over every stinken log there. But, something told me to open them up, so i did and found a norhtern brown snake... about 9 inches long. One of the first snakes i have caught that isnt a garter, besides one copperhead, but i had some help on that one...

You can go the the Photo Album here and upload photos, but it takes a couple of days, as they have to be approved by a site manager before they get posted.
A better way to share photos would be for you to go to:
http://photobucket.com/
and set up a free account and then upload your photos there. Once you have it set up, you will have an online storage place for all your photos, and you can cut and paste the URL address of a specific photo here in the forum. Then folks here can follow the link you post to see the photo in your storage box at photobucket. A lot of people use it, and it works very well. It is the only way to put photos on many sites. Give it a try, and once you have your photos loaded there, let us know here and tell us the address so we can see the photos. I do not know if photo bucket has an age limit to set up an account, but if it asks, you can tell them you are 18 or something, LOL .
Best Regards JohnZ
