Herpetologists make significant SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS to our knowledge of reptiles and amphibians. The key words here are scientific and contributions. If this is not you then you are not a herpetologist with or without a degree (or television show).

Perhaps Tad is trying to bring the discussion on the definition of a Herpetologist from the Survey area to the general forum so that more people can contribute to it. I would suggest that people read the post there first and then jump in here.
All of the dictionarys you will check will say that a Herpetologist is :
``A person who studies the biology of reptiles and amphibians.``
``One versed in herpetology, or the natural history of reptiles.``
None of them say anything about having a degree.
None of them say anything about publishing.
None of them say anything about contributing.
A twelve year old with a pet garter snake is a amature Herpetologist, if he learns something from keeping that snake.
It seems that some of the people in college working on a Herpetology degree tend to think that only they are entitled to be called Herpetologists. That is really unfortunate, but they are young and still learning in the public school system, so, you have to expect some of that and give them a few years in the real world outside of college to understand. This is not to say that they should not be proud of their hard work and accomplishments, as they should. It is just to say that they should check the definition of a title before defending it with their own qualifications.
And it would seem that this McKayPHD, who comes in here out of nowhere claiming to a envemomation specialist for the DOD is probably nothing more than what Jeremy stated, and is probably a troll, as he has not filled out his profile, and he is not smart enough to even get ``Ph.D.`` right ! This tells me that this guy is in way a Ph.D. or a PhD ! There are plenty of REAL envenomation specialists at this site with REAL Ph.D `s. And his attack on Chris saying that only he as a MD is entitled to be called a envenomation specialist is just plain foolish, and further shows he has no idea what he is talking about. Of course, the DOD is known for not always hiring the brightest folks, but thats a different story. And it is funny to hear the old ``real Herpetologists dont use Scientific Names, LOL ! Man, I have been hearing that one for 40 years !
Anyway, just some random thoughts to bring this topic out of the Survey where everyone can contribute, and to stir things up some
Best Regards JohnZ

This is a topic that seems to have upset some folks and apparently, isn’t going away anytime soon. O.k. allow me to upset some more folks. Wikipeadia’s (the online encyclopedia) defines the suffix -ology or –logy as denoting a field of study or academic discipline, and -ologist describes a person who studies that field. They make no distinction as to what kind of study is requred to be refered to as an “-ologist”. However, it is generally accepted that people who go by the titles; cardiologist, archiologist, biologist, entomologist, gynaecologist, pathologist, opthamologist, paleontologist, pathologist, toxicologist, zoologist, and many more, typically have the word “doctor” somewhere in there titles so it’s a fair assumption that the term “herpetologist” is generally refering to someone with a Ph.D. Now, as I’ve already stated, I really don’t care what you call yourselvs, as I’m NOT a doctor and thus not offended. Maybe we should take a page from the “eye” speaclest and refer to ourselves as herptonotrist!

I normally wouldn’t put my “Two Cents” in on a subject such as this, but I have known a few Herpers in my life that never Attended any College, never even finished High School, yet they are more Knowledgeable than some Ph.D. Herpetologist I’ve spoke to. Now, I have worked with Venomous and Non-Venomous Snakes for15 Odd Years, pluss I have worked with some other Reptiles and Amphibians. Even with this Experience under me, I will not call myself a Herpetologist. On the other hand, I see nothing wrong with a Devoted Herper calling themselves Herpetologist. I know that this could and probably will Inflame some of the Members here that actually Payed their Dues by going to School, but I just want you all to know I mean nothing by this. .............................Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

I respect anyone who goes to college and who goes through all of the stress to become an "official" herpetologist. I can also see why some people would be offended by someone who may have not even made it through high school claiming to be on their level, but I think that if you dedicate most of your life(even if you dont go to college) "studying" or observing something, you can call yourself whatever you want. You can buy books, and share information on the web or in person, etc. and learn about reptiles and amphibians to the level where you could be called a herpetologist. I know that there are beauty schools that give classes to become a beautician....I also know of people who have never been to college and are still beauticians that make a living doing it.......You DO NOT need a degree to make contributions to anything. The only thing a degree does is qualify you for better jobs, gives you pride and respect and a few more things that have slipped my mind. I have herped with people with degrees and people who have not....I have also learned from both.

In that case, I declare myself "Lord Larry, Master of all Serpents". (But only because two people are already using "Snake Master" and I don't don't want to be mistaken for EITHER of them.)
