I AGREE WITH ROB 100% REGADING THIS TOPIC!!!
I think Als approach to these types of things (more so hybrids, but selctive breeding aswell) is very similar to my own.
I always love how effective his single comment is when I hear of someone come here and ask what the best way to produce a "gabino" is.
"Just because you can, does'nt mean you should"
I think that statement holds true here aswell. Me and JohnZ have discussed this before if I'm not mistaken, and have some similar views on this topic. Other than melanistic, albino, etc, that ARE NATURALLY OCCURING, I hate "morphs", and would much prefer a snake "as it should be, naturally".
The generations upon generations of selective breeding that the ball pythons have been subjected to, only to benefit our dollar, is sickening. Many Colubrids are not far behind either, with corn snake "morphs" being pretty "popular". If you find an interestingly patterened snake, by all means, try to keep that trait going.
There is a lot that can be learned by breeding programs to isolate traits that can naturally be produced, but THERE IS A LIMIT.
If it takes 13 years and 300+ breedings (with breeding parents back to siblings, to het for this/that, introducing new bloodlines then breeding back to siblings/parents all over again), than it is quite apparent that whatever "super-morph" such a project will produce, WOULD NEVER occur in nature, and subsequently is immoral and selfish.
Why would'nt we all like to have snakes they way you would find then naturally, untouched by human hands, anyway??!!
Again, to some degree..acceptable. But, there is CERTAINLY a limit.
Take Care,
~John Mendrola.
