I posted a pic of my bite in the snake bite photos under "Who done it." I was bit in Miami, FL while running a sod cutter along side of a deck in some rainy/muddy conditions. I'm not sure if it was a spider or a snake. It hurt, but not a lot until later that night when it really started to swell. I was bit at 11am and it didn't really start to itch and burn until sometime during the night. I'm concerned that the doc I went to didn't do enough as he only gave me antibiotics and a tetnis booster. Also I'd like to know what kind of snake bit me so I can brag about it later.

Sounds more like some kind of spider bite or perhaps some kind of wasp or hornet sting. JohnZ

Well it was very noisy when it happened, so I cannot rule that out. I have never been know to swell up like this from a wasp or hornet sting. My largest piece of reasoning was the proximity of the two wounds, one is obviously more pronounced than the other, but that and the proximity to deck where something could have slipped back under quickly.

A venomous snake bite almost always would have had severe pain, discoloration, and swelling starting immediatly after the bite, and getting worse over time. Swelling that started several hours later was most likely not a from a snake bite. JohnZ

I can say from experience, a snakebite in something that you notice hours later...You are instantly in a "world of hurt"

When I was a young child, I used to catch wasps and bees with my hands and put them in jars (yea, i was an idiot). I was stung probably hundreds of times with no aparent ill effects. When i was 15 or so, I got stung for the first time in a few years and it tore me up. Massive swelling and a trip to the emergency room. So just because they haven't done anything to you in the past, I wouldn't rule out a wasp/hornet/bee sting.

I agree. Most likely some kind of wasp. Ground dwelling yellowjackets are small enough not to be noticed, but pack a helluva wallop. One guy on my crew got a day off this week from getting a few stings on a jobsite..the next day, the boss came out & got stung & got the rest of the day off.
A snakebite from either of the local rattlesnakes or the cottonmouth would have caused intense, immediate burning pain. You would not have continued working.
Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. ~~Greg~~

The choices for your area would be, pigmy rattlesnake, eastern diamondback, cottonmouth, and coral snake(maybe some non native exotics) and from what I have heard, bites from any of those would cause extreme pain and immediate reactions.

Oh, it could have been some sort of caterpillar. I got stung on several occasions by saddleback caterpillars and thought that I had gotten bit by a snake or something. It hurt immediately but didnt start to swell until a little later. The swelling wasnt much but it still hurt. It could have also been a cow killer ant. The big red ones that squeak when you touch them.
